What is Pilates?
Pilates was originally developed by the German fitness trainer Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. His idea was to fuse the meditative eastern styles of exercise with his own western studies in order to attain physical and mental perfection.
He opened his first studio in New York in the 1930’s and the long, lean muscles that the method promotes soon gave him a devout following within the local dance and performing arts community. Pilates remains popular with dancers to this day, along with other entertainers and sportsmen
A particular feature of Pilates is its focus on the core postural muscles. These keep the body balanced and support the spine, providing flexibility and balance as well as promoting healthy bones and increased energy.
That’s why osteopaths, physiotherapists and general practitioners regularly recommend Pilates as one of the safest forms of exercise around. It can benefit just about everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.
